Incorporating the effects of manufacturing errors in the design and engineering of an optical system often relates directly success, regardless of volume. This manuscript outlines a sampling of common and cutting-edge methods of optical system design for manufacture and effective tolerance assignment. A high-level assessment of what is needed for implementation in optical design tools is provided.
Key words: optical design, optical tolerancing, design for manufacture
